Dear dog lover:
We at the AKC Canine Health Foundation have many exciting successes to share this month.
We are pleased to announce the discovery of the gene responsible for adult-onset neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis in Tibetan Terriers and that the same gene can also be found in a fatal human disorder related to Parkinson’s disease.
Health Tracks: Mean Seeds and TruckVault Cares The most recent grant funded by CHF to benefit sporting dogs investigates “mean seeds” and the role they play in grass awn migration disease. In the sporting dog world, there is a perception among owners that there has been a dramatic escalation in the incidence of grass awn migration disease in the last 20 years. Read about "mean seeds" and the ongoing research.
As a result of the "mean seeds" initiative and the other work CHF has done to prevent, treat and cure injuries that occur in the field, the AKC Canine Health Foundation will be a beneficiary of the TruckVault Cares program. Starting later this year, viewers of the television show WingShooting USA will be urged to vote online for a charity. CHF will be competing for a cash donation and the voters will be eligible for gear prizes.
Featured Grant: The Effects of Baicalein on Canine Osteosarcoma Cells Flavonoids, including baicalein, are plant nutrients being used with increasing frequency in veterinary medicine. There is a need to better understand the compounds and how they affect common cancer treatments. This study may open the door for future clinical trials examining baicalein for use in delaying tumor growth in osteosarcoma. Read more about this grant.
Health Tips: Immunonutrition Immunonutrition is an emerging field that evaluates the impact of diet on immune function, particularly the diet of an individual dog in relation to his or her health condition. In the past, researchers focused on understanding the effect of malnutrition on immune health. Today, the focus is on how immune function and nutrition relate to life stage and stress in healthy dogs. Read more about immunonutrition.
